Acne Scars 101: What Your Skin Actually Needs to Repair

Acne Scars 101: What Your Skin Actually Needs to Repair

By Katie Stewart, Registered Holistic Nutritionist + FDN-P fade acne scars naturally

Let’s be honest… acne scars can feel just as frustrating as the breakouts themselves.

You finally get a handle on your skin, things start calming down… and then you’re left with lingering marks, uneven texture, or those deeper indentations that just don’t seem to budge.

I’ve been there. And so have so many of our clients.

Here’s the part most people don’t realize, though: fading acne scars isn’t just about what you put on your skin. It’s about how your skin heals, how your body regenerates, and how supported your internal systems are.

Instead of feeling like you have to try everything and hope something sticks, let’s slow this down and walk through it in a way that actually supports your skin.

We’re going to take a deeper, more thoughtful approach so your skin has what it needs to move forward.

First, Let’s Clear This Up: Scars vs Pigmentation

Before you even think about “fixing” anything, you need to know what you’re dealing with.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
These are the flat red, pink, or brown marks left behind after a breakout. They’re not true scars. They’re pigment changes, and they can fade with the right approach.

True acne scars:
These involve structural changes in the skin:

  • Atrophic scars: indents or pitting from collagen loss
  • Hypertrophic scars: raised areas from excess collagen

Why this matters:

  • Pigmentation responds well to skincare + internal support.
  • True scars require deeper collagen rebuilding strategies.

The Step Everyone Skips: Prevention While You’re Breaking Out

If you’re still getting acne, this is where your focus should be.

Because every inflamed breakout is a potential scar.

Key habits that actually make a difference:

  1. Stop picking (I know, easier said than done): Every time you pick, you increase inflammation, spread bacteria, and damage collagen. That’s the perfect recipe for scarring.
  2. Calm inflammation fast:  The longer inflammation sits, the higher the chance of pigmentation.
  3. Look for calming, barrier-supporting ingredients such as: aloe, chamomile, green tea, centella asiatica and willow bark.

Clean product options:

Pro tip: icing a breakout for a few minutes can reduce swelling significantly.

Your Skin Can’t Heal Without Internal Support

This is where most skincare advice completely falls apart.

You can use all the serums in the world, but if your body doesn’t have the building blocks to repair skin… progress will be slow.

Focus on:

  1. Vitamin A-rich foods support cell turnover and skin regeneration. Think:
  • Egg yolks
  • Carrots
  • Sweet potato
  • Spinach
  1. Protein + collagen support: Your skin needs amino acids to rebuild. Options:
  • Bone broth (homemade or high-quality store-bought) for natural collagen and minerals
  • Grass-fed collagen powder added to coffee, smoothies, or oatmeal (Organika Enhanced Collagen)
  • Marine collagen if you prefer a lighter, more absorbable option (Genuine Health Marine Collagen)
  • High-protein meals with eggs, chicken, turkey, grass-fed beef, or wild-caught fish
  • Plant-based options like lentils, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and quinoa if needed
  1. Minerals (often overlooked)
  • Zinc, copper balance, and silica directly impact collagen production and how well your skin repairs
  • Imbalances can slow healing, leading to lingering marks and uneven texture
  • An HTMA shows your unique mineral patterns and ratios, not just deficiencies (check out our HTMA Testing Package)
  • Helps you target support instead of guessing with supplements
  • Balanced minerals = faster recovery, more even-looking skin
  • Listen to our podcast episode on the HTMA and benefits for skin.

Correcting Pigmentation (Without Wrecking Your Barrier)

This is where we clean up the marks.

But gently.

Over-exfoliating is one of the biggest mistakes I see as an Acne Nutritionist. It actually prolongs healing and can make pigmentation worse.

What works better:

  1. Gentle chemical exfoliation (not harsh scrubs)  Look for:
  • Lactic acid
  • Mandelic acid
  • Low-dose salicylic acid

Product options:

  1. Brightening + pigment-regulating ingredients. These help fade marks without irritation:
  • Vitamin C
  • Licorice root
  • Niacinamide
  • Alpha arbutin

Product options:

Consistency here matters more than intensity.

Rebuilding Collagen for Real Scars

If you’re dealing with indents or texture, this is where we shift focus.
You’re not just “fading” anymore. You’re rebuilding. fade acne scars naturally

  1. Microneedling:
    • One of the most effective treatments for atrophic scars. Stimulates collagen naturally and improves texture over time.
  2. Red light therapy:
    • Massively underrated. Supports collagen production, reduces inflammation, and speeds up healing.

At-home options:

  1. Retinal (not harsh retinol)
    • Supports cell turnover without compromising your barrier.

Product Options:

Holistic Skin Treatments That Actually Support Healing

If you’re going to invest in treatments, choose ones that work with your skin, not against it.

Best options:

  • Microneedling
  • Gentle enzyme facials
  • LED light therapy
  • Oxygen facials

Be cautious with:

  • Aggressive peels
  • Overuse of lasers (can worsen pigmentation in some skin types)

Find a practitioner who understands acne-prone skin and doesn’t just push intensity.

Barrier Repair Is Non-Negotiable

You cannot heal scars if your skin barrier is compromised.

Signs your barrier needs support:

  • Tightness
  • Flakiness
  • Sensitivity
  • Breakouts that won’t calm down

Focus on:

Hydration + lipids fade acne scars naturally

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Ceramides
  • Squalane

Product options:

When your barrier is strong, your skin heals faster. Period.

SPF Is What Locks in Your Results

If you skip this step, you’re undoing everything.

UV exposure deepens pigmentation and slows healing.

Look for mineral-based SPF with zinc:

Daily. No exceptions.

The Truth No One Talks About

Fading acne scars takes time.

There’s no overnight fix. No magic serum.

But when you:

  • Support your body internally
  • Use the right non-toxic products
  • Protect your skin barrier fade acne scars naturally
  • Stay consistent

Your skin will change.

We see it every single day with our clients.

"I just wanted to let you know that this program works!!!

I have never struggled with acne but then I turned 21 and then I broke out all over my fave. I never wanted to go anywhere and didn't want to talk to anybody. I became very depressed and angry. There were times I wanted to quit the program because I felt like nothing was working! By the grace of God, He got me through and I am healed! I just wanted to encourage everyone to keep going!!! You got this! Don't give up! Good things are coming!"

"I actually enjoy the look of my face with less make-up."

I used to wear a lot of powder and concealer to cover the break out areas, as well as to hide my scars. Both my breakouts and scars are lessening in amount and redness!!
