Maple Walnut Apple Crisp (Paleo + Vegan)

Maple Walnut Apple Crisp

Being my favourite holiday, I’ve created quite the collection of Thanksgiving recipes over the years (like my grain-free stuffing, green bean casserole or butternut squash soup). This year my Maple Walnut Apple Crisp will be gracing the dessert table alongside my pumpkin and pecan pies.

It’s sooooo yummy. I make it with local organic Honeycrisp apples I pick up from the farm stand and lots of warming spices. The “crisp” on top is a rich combination of almond flour, crushed walnuts and dark maple syrup. You and your Thanksgiving guests will absolutely love it!

An Apple a Day…

Before we get to the recipe, let’s go through why apples truly are one of nature’s superfoods. High in antioxidants, apples contain lots of phenolic compounds. Not only do apples fight free radicals that promote disease, aging and acne – they also help to reduce inflammation in the body.

Apples are a great source of fibre with over four grams in a piece. More specifically, they contain a fibre called pectin. A soluble fibre, pectin binds to fatty substances (including toxins) in the digestive tract and helps ensure elimination via your poop. And as I explain in this blog, healthy poops are critical for clearing up acne.

Author: Katie Stewart

Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 6 large honey crisp apples; peeled cored and cut in 1” chunks
  • ¼ cup coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp arrowroot starch
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ginger
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp sea salt

For the topping:

  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1 cup crushed walnuts
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ¼ cup coconut oil room temperature
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ginger
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp sea salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 13” x 9” casserole dish with coconut oil. Set aside.
  • Add all the ingredients for the filling to a large bowl. Gently mix until the apples are well coated.
  • Pour apple mixture into the greased casserole dish.
  • In the same bowl, add all the ingredients for the topping. Mix until crumbly.
  • Crumble the topping over the apple mixture.
  • Place in the oven and bake for 40 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and let sit for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a nut-free version, tigernut flour can be used in place of the almond flour and shredded coconut in place of the walnuts.

"I just wanted to let you know that this program works!!!

I have never struggled with acne but then I turned 21 and then I broke out all over my fave. I never wanted to go anywhere and didn't want to talk to anybody. I became very depressed and angry. There were times I wanted to quit the program because I felt like nothing was working! By the grace of God, He got me through and I am healed! I just wanted to encourage everyone to keep going!!! You got this! Don't give up! Good things are coming!"

"I actually enjoy the look of my face with less make-up."

I used to wear a lot of powder and concealer to cover the break out areas, as well as to hide my scars. Both my breakouts and scars are lessening in amount and redness!!
