Healthy Hot Chocolate
January and February in Canada are rough. I’ve seen enough -35 C this winter and have taken to hibernating fireplace side with a big mug of my healthy hot chocolate in hand.
And I’m not talking about the instant hot chocolate drink mix that’s an inflammatory combination of sugar, modified milk ingredients, artificial flavour, and preservatives. I mean a creamy cup of real chocolatey goodness full of antioxidants and sweetened with pure Canadian maple syrup.
The Healthy Chocolate
I have quite a few recipes on my blog with raw cacao and often explain the difference between raw cacao and cocoa powder. Yes, there is a BIG difference between the two. Raw cacao is cold-pressed allowing it to retain all the valuable nutrients of the cacao bean. Cocoa powder, on the other hand, has been heated with high temperatures, destroying the beneficial vitamins and minerals.
- One of the highest food sources of antioxidants (40x that of blueberries)
- Fights free radicals that increase
aging and your risk of disease Highest plant source of iron- Packs more calcium than cow’s milk
- Great source of magnesium for brain and nerve health
- Helps reduce blood pressure
- Lowers bad cholesterol

Healing Elixir
The base recipe for this healthy hot chocolate is delicious as is, but feel free to throw in additional ingredients to turn it into a healing elixir. Here are a few of my favourite boosters. Add one or all — totally up to you!
- Collagen powder is great for those looking to soothe their digestive system while boosting their skin health (why I always recommended it to my clients in The Clear Skin Solution)
- Cinnamon supports the immune system, stimulates circulation, and helps relieve digestive discomfort.
- Coconut oil provides the body with good monounsaturated fats and a clean energy source to fuel your body.
