The Acne Advice That’s Making Your Skin Worse

The Acne Advice That’s Making Your Skin Worse acne advice making worse

By Katie Stewart, Registered Holistic Nutritionist + FDN-Pa

You’ve tried the serums. You’ve cut out dairy. You’ve tried going gluten-free. You’ve taken the supplements your favourite influencer recommended. Maybe you’ve even done a round of antibiotics.

And your skin is still not clearing. acne advice making worse

Here’s something I want you to hear: you are not the problem. The advice is.

So much of what gets shared about acne is either incomplete, oversimplified, or completely misdirected. And some of it is actually making things worse.

Let me walk you through the biggest myths I see every single day in my practice, and explain what’s actually going on under the surface.

Myth #1: Acne Is a Skincare Problem

This one keeps people stuck the longest, and I totally understand why. You see acne on your skin. So naturally, you reach for a product.

But your skin is not where the problem starts. It’s where the problem shows up.

Acne is almost always an internal signal. Your body is communicating that something is off, whether that’s gut imbalances, hormone shifts, detox congestion, or blood sugar instability.

No amount of money spent on skincare will replace what needs to happen internally. Topicals can calm inflammation and support your barrier. They cannot rebalance your hormones or repair your gut lining.

Skincare has a role. Just not the role most people are giving it.

Myth #2: You Just Haven’t Found the Right Product Yet

This is how the skincare industry keeps you spending.

You try something new. It doesn’t work. You think you need something stronger. You buy the next thing. Repeat.

The cycle is exhausting and expensive. And the frustrating truth is that no topical product can get to the root of what’s happening inside your body.

That doesn’t mean skincare is useless. It means we need to be strategic about it. Using the right products while also supporting your body from the inside? That’s a whole different result.

Myth #3: Clear Skin Happens Quickly

You can’t Amazon Prime clear skin. But the skincare industry keeps selling it like you can.

And when their fast-clearing promise doesn’t work for you, it’s easy to land in the wrong conclusion: that something’s wrong with you. That you’re harder to fix.

You’re not.

Here’s the nuance nobody explains: there’s a difference between getting clearer and being fully clear.

Clearer can happen quickly. When you stabilize digestion, blood sugar, and stress, real shifts show up within weeks. Less inflammation. Calmer skin. Fewer new breakouts. That’s what Clearer Skin in 30 Days is built around.

Fully clear is a longer timeline. From our client data, about 60% of people fully clear in 4 to 6 months, 25% in 6 to 9, and the rest somewhere between 9 months and a year. Your current skin is a reflection of everything your body has been through up until now, and that doesn’t unwind overnight.

We talked about this in depth on the podcast: Debunking Acne Myths: Why Quick Fixes Don’t Work, and also in How Long to Clear Acne? Patience, Personalization, and Debunking Myths. If you’ve been feeling defeated by the timeline, both of those episodes are worth a listen.

Myth #4: Your Diet Is the Whole Answer

Diet matters. It genuinely does. What you eat has a real impact on your gut, your hormones, your blood sugar, and your inflammation levels.

But diet alone will not clear your skin if there are other pieces missing.

I’ve worked with people who have the most nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diet you could imagine, and their skin is still breaking out. Why? Because there’s something else going on. Maybe it’s a gut imbalance. Maybe it’s a mineral deficiency affecting hormone metabolism. Maybe it’s a nervous system that’s been in overdrive for years.

This is the whole premise behind our podcast episode Why Diet Alone Won’t Fix Your Acne: The Missing Pieces to Clear Skin. Diet is foundational. It’s just not the full picture.

That said, what you eat absolutely matters, and there are specific foods that genuinely support your hormones, gut, and skin. Check out What to Eat for Hormonal Acne: An Acne Nutritionist’s Top Picks for a practical place to start.

Myth #5: Birth Control Balances Your Hormones

This is a big one that I want to speak about gently and honestly.

Birth control can improve breakouts for some people by suppressing your natural hormone cycle. But it doesn’t address why those symptoms were happening in the first place.

The hormonal imbalances are often still there, just masked. That’s why so many women experience post-pill acne when they come off. Their body’s original patterns come back, sometimes louder than before.

This is not about judging anyone’s choices around birth control. It’s about making sure you have the full picture so you can make informed decisions about your own health.

We dedicated a whole episode to this: Post-Pill Acne: What Your Doctor Isn’t Telling You.

If you’re currently on the pill, thinking about coming off, or already dealing with post-pill breakouts, I created How to Come Off the Pill specifically for this. It walks you through how to support your body through the transition so your skin doesn’t have to pay the price.

Myth #6: One Root Cause Is Behind Everything

“It’s just my gut.” “It’s just stress.” “It’s just hormones.”

Acne is rarely “just” one thing.

Your body is a system. Your gut, hormones, liver, nervous system, and blood sugar all talk to each other constantly. When one area is struggling, others feel it too.

This is why so many people try to fix one thing and don’t get the results they hoped for. They fixed a piece of the puzzle without looking at the whole picture.

Understanding the 5 Acne Clearing Pillars, which include Gut Health, Detoxification, Hormonal Balance, Nervous System Regulation, and Nourishing Skincare, gives you a framework to see acne more completely. You can hear more about the full picture in this podcast episode: Adult Acne Explained: 5 Holistic Pillars to Clear Your Skin From the Inside Out.

Myth #7: You Don’t Need Functional Testing

You can absolutely make progress without testing. Changing your diet, reducing sugar, supporting your gut, and managing stress are all valuable steps anyone can take.

But when you hit a plateau? When you’ve done all the right things and your skin still isn’t moving? That’s often when testing changes everything.

Because instead of guessing, you actually see what’s happening in your body.

An HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis), for example, can show mineral imbalances like zinc and copper, how your body is managing stress, and whether your detox pathways are being supported. Minerals run almost every process in the body, including hormone production and skin repair.

If you’ve been stuck for a while and you’re ready to stop guessing, ouHTMA Testing Package is a great place to start. You get the test plus a full review of your results, so you know exactly what your body needs, not just what the internet says to try next.

You can learn more about this on the blog: How Food Sensitivities Impact Acne and the podcast episode Unlock Clearer Skin with Hair Mineral Testing.

Myth #8: The Latest TikTok Trend Will Fix It

Chlorophyll. Beef tallow. Collagen. Seed cycling without any context. The list keeps growing.

Some of these things can genuinely be helpful for the right person at the right time. But a trend is not a protocol.

Acne is too individual, too layered, and too connected to your personal internal environment for a single trending ingredient to be the answer.

The question is never “is this thing good or bad?” The question is “does my body actually need this right now?” acne advice making worse

What Actually Works

Real skin progress comes from a few consistent things: acne advice making worse

Understanding your specific root drivers. Supporting your gut and digestion. Balancing your blood sugar. Addressing hormone imbalances with targeted support. Giving your body time and the right inputs.

It’s not glamorous. It’s not a quick fix. But it works.

If you’re ready to stop guessing and start getting real answers, The Clear Skin Solution is my high-touch coaching program designed to do exactly that. We use functional testing, personalised nutrition, and a step-by-step approach to figure out what your body actually needs.

You Are Not the Problem

If you’ve been following all the advice and still not seeing results, I want you to know that you’re not broken. You’ve just been working with an incomplete map.

The acne industry runs on quick fixes and simple answers because those are easy to sell. Real progress requires understanding your body as a whole system, not a problem to be patched.

And once you have that understanding? Everything starts to shift.

Paragraph

Acne isn’t a skin problem. It’s a body signal.

We help you understand what your body’s been asking for, so you can stop guessing and move forward with clarity.
