Coffee and Acne: Making the Switch for Clearer Skin

Navigating the world of acne can be challenging, especially when it comes to dietary choices.

For many, coffee is a cherished daily ritual, but it might not be the best idea for those struggling with acne. The caffeine found in coffee can trigger spikes in stress hormones like cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels can stimulate your oil glands to produce more oil, potentially making acne worse. Plus, coffee is known to be acidic, which can disrupt the balance of our gut flora—an essential component for clear skin.

If you still crave that warm cup, consider switching to an Organic Swiss Water Process Decaf. This method doesn’t use harmful chemicals and has much lower levels of caffeine. This helps ensure a cleaner cup that’s kinder to your skin and overall health. There are lots of great brands out there. In Canada, I go with Kicking Horse Coffee.

And here’s a skin-friendly tip: if you’re keen on ditching coffee altogether, ramp up the amount of non-dairy milk in your drink for a creamy, satisfying, and skin-loving alternative.

Deliciously Healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte

You can easily create a healthy coffeehouse-style pumpkin spice latte at home with just a few delicious (and skin loving!) ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk use ½ cup more if making a coffee-free version
  • ½ cup brewed organic decaf coffee omit for coffee-free version
  • 3 tbsp pumpkin puree
  • 1-3 tsp raw honey or maple syrup depending on desired sweetness
  • 1 tsp pumpkin spice blend see below
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

For the pumpkin spice blend

  • 2 tbsp cinnamon ground
  • 1 tsp ginger ground
  • 1 tsp nutmeg ground
  • 1 tsp clove ground

Instructions

  • Warm the milk on the stove top over medium-high heat.
  • In the meantime, combine all the ingredients for the pumpkin spice blend in a small mason jar. Shake well.
  • Pour the warmed milk into your blender along with the remaining ingredients.
  • Mix on high speed until well combined.
  • Sprinkle with a little bit of the pumpkin spice blend, if desired. Enjoy.
