In my early twenties, I would have been opting for a green beer this St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Instead, I’ll be happily sipping on my Shamrock Shake. The best part? No hangover ;-).
But let’s be real, the majority of people will be indulging in their fair share of celebratory beverages. This sweet and creamy smoothie makes the perfect pre-game breakfast or hangover helper.
Alcohol depletes your body of key nutrients like B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc. So it’s essential to stock up on foods rich in these vitamins and minerals before and after a night of drinking. And we all know that drinking dehydrates you, further depleting your electrolytes (ie. potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium). That’s why this Shamrock Smoothie is so great – it contains all those nutrients stolen by a night of green beer and Irish music. Here’s a quick little breakdown of the key Shamrock Shake ingredients:
I’ve also included a few drops of spearmint essential oil not only to give it the shamrock pop, but also for it’s digestive soothing properties. It’s actually been used to help reduce stomach upset for centuries. Making it the perfect companion to your tummy after a night out.
*Be sure to only consume CPTG essential oils internally. To learn more about using doTERRA’s CPTG oils internally, click here.
One ingredient I do want to single out is spirulina. A blue-green micro-algae, spirulina is truly nature’s most amazing superfood. It contains everything from Vitamin A down to Zinc. Since spirulina is a food source, the nutrients it contains are super absorbable by the body. It’s iron content, specifically, is incredible at helping prevent anemia. Spirulina actually has 2300% more iron than spinach!
Another nutrient that people always worry about? Calcium. Luckily, spirulina contains 300% more calcium than whole milk. And if that wasn’t enough to sell you on the benefits of nature’s multivitamin, spirulina has 3900% more beta-carotene than carrots. Beta-carotene is a key antioxidant for your eyes and immune system.
Remember to always look for Hawaiian Spirulina to ensure a pure, contaminant-free product. My brand of choice is Gandalf Spirulina (known as Nutrex in the US).
