Why Eating Organic Doesn’t Make You Healthy

By The KSW Team · January 23, 2018 · 3 min read

That’s a pretty bold statement, I know. Let me explain…

As a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, our family eats 100% organic. I truly believe that eating the most nutritious food available is the best thing you can do for your body. You are what you eat – and what your food eats.

But, you need to make sure you’re also reducing your toxic load.

What’s that?

First, let’s define the term “toxic load.”

A toxin is a poison or synthetic chemical that is known to have damaging effects on your body. Aside from air pollution, you are exposed to toxins every day through three main sources:

  1. Food & Water
  2. Cleaning supplies
  3. Personal care products

When you are exposed to any of these toxins through direct ingestion, inhalation, or applied topically your body has to process them. Your liver and kidneys work to eliminate them through your sweat, pee, and poop.

Overburdened

Unfortunately, your poor body is flooded with toxins each and every day. This causes a log jam to build up in your body, which damages your organs and makes it harder for your body to get rid of the harmful chemicals.

Thus, leading to your toxic load.

Over 84,000 industrial chemicals are in use for products we use every day.

You may think…

“But, they must test them first – right?”

Nope.

The FDA requires no pre-market safety testing on our personal care products before they hit store shelves. The majority of the products in use have never been independently tested for safety.

And industrial chemicals don’t just mean heavy duty cleaners in manufacturing plants. Industrial chemicals are the ingredients in your kid’s shampoo, your window cleaner, and the frozen pizza you warmed up for dinner last night. They are everywhere.

Just think about your morning routine alone. The average woman applies 9 different products containing a combined total of 168 different chemicals every day. While many of the ingredients in these products may be harmless, some are known carcinogens, neurotoxins, and endocrine disruptors (a.k.a. cancer-causing, toxic to the brain, and disrupt your hormones).

Women are at the highest risk of exposure because we typically use more personal care products than our male counterparts. For pregnant women, the risk is even higher as she can pass on these toxins to her unborn child. A 2010 study done by the President’s Cancer Panel found 300 contaminants have been detected in the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies.

So what do we do?

The bottom line: remove as many chemicals as possible.

Take into consideration the key areas to remove chemicals from:

  • The food you eat
  • How you store and prepare your food
  • Cleaning supplies
  • The personal care products you use

Kinda overwhelming to think about, right? I totally get it. When I first started my natural lifestyle I had no idea what to look for or what to actually use. I felt hopeless, frustrated and to be honest, scared.

But, I made the decision. I would remove as many chemicals from my life as possible. Eight years later, I can now say we live a fully natural lifestyle, free of scary chemicals – well as free as you can be in the modern world. So, that’s why I created The Whole Home Detox. I wanted to share all the research, resources, and tips & tricks I have to help you create your own healthy lifestyle. Learn more about The Whole Home Detox here.

So this is what I mean when I say “eating organic doesn’t make you healthy.” Eating organic and living a natural, chemical-free lifestyle are truly the basis for a healthy life.
